Bone grafting may be necessary if you have to get dental implants, and you would benefit from this procedure.
A bone graft is an oral surgery procedure that may be required if your jawbone is not dense or thick enough. During a bone graft, we will transplant a piece of bone from another area of your jaw or body to your jawbone. While we typically see best results with bone taken from your own body, we can also utilize artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank if needed. Your jawbone then grows together with the grafted bone tissue, creating a stronger, more stable foundation.
You may need a bone graft if your bone density is insufficient to support a dental implant or other types of treatment. While bone grafts are most commonly needed for implant dentistry, they may also be required for certain types of periodontal therapy when bone has been lost due to gum disease. If your jawbone is not strong or thick enough to support a dental implant, our prosthodontist may recommend a bone graft. After a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone begins to resorb, or deteriorate, at the site of the tooth extraction. The resorption must be corrected before the dental implant is placed.

How long does it take for a bone graft to heal for it to support a dental implant?
The bone graft has to heal for a minimum of four months to be strong enough to support a dental implant.
Can any dentist perform a bone graft?
A bone graft is considered to be part of oral surgery, which is why it is important for us to consider going with someone who is capable of being a prosthodontist and a oral surgeon for you. Dr. Zev Kaufman is capable of performing bone grafts for you and adding dental implants for you too.
How long does it take for a bone graft to heal?
Extremely. The potential risks are rejection of the graft – which is highly unlikely; or infection, which again, is highly unlikely. We give antibiotics to try and combat that.
How much do bone grafts hurt?
For a bone graft, your gums might feel sore, as if you bit wrong on a chip and it made your gums hurt. With an implant, there’s no pain from the implant, but the gums can be a little sore – similar to when you bite into a chip wrong, but it’s much easier on the patient than pulling a tooth.
